Trials That
Strengthen Faith


Good, bad or indifferent, I have kept the faith while making transitions in my life. I believe that even if I have faith the size of a mustard seed, I can move mountains, and nothing will be impossible for me (Matt. 17:20). I thank God for blessing me with this tenacity because I have always looked forward to the what's next in my life. I must admit, it was difficult for me to leave the group home, but I knew I had to press forward, especially since prior to getting laid off from the Department of Welfare, one of my cousins tested positive to the newly discovered human immunodeficiency virus, or HIV. This retrovirus lead to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).

There was not very much public knowledge about HIV at the time of my cousin's diagnosis. However, the stigmas were rampant. The world was calling the virus the gay man's disease because some of the first well known cases were diagnosed in gay men. People were saying the disease was God's way of punishing gays.

The stigmas of the disease were ever changing, shifting from being called the gay man's disease to saying it started in Africa...
